“Martijn Couwenhoven is a sensitive seeker, who always finds a subtle balance between form and colour in his paintings. Starting from visible reality, he quickly leads the viewer to a new view of the world. In the early works, that world was motionless and still. He chose details that became powerful elements in their own uniqueness. In later works, Couwenhoven seeks out movement. The fixed forms (based on the corner of a table, a bridge, the wall of a building) were followed by a view of the waving reeds, the light along the clouds, and the glitter of the water. The artist’s signature adapted and followed the rhythm of the wind, seeking the flowing. And there too he achieves a wonderful balance that shines through the wildness of colour and form. Couwenhoven adds layers to what he sees, and thus shows that what is seen itself has depth.”
